About us
Handcrafted Custom Furniture in Boulder County
Founded in 2018, Dust & Spark is a premier custom furniture and metal fabrication studio based in Longmont, Colorado. Specializing in the marriage of wood and steel, we create "functional art" designed to bring intentionality and foster connection to our client’s spaces. What began as a one guy in a garage has evolved into a growing commercial design house known for its meticulous attention to detail and commitment to sustainable, high-end furniture fabrication.
-
Dust & Spark was built on a dual legacy of creativity and technical precision. The studio’s founder, Scott Hensen, was heavily influenced by the artistic eye of his grandmother, a renowned Boulder potter, and the rigorous building skills of his father, a remodeling contractor. This background developed a passion for hands-on creativity, ultimately leading to the confluence fine woodworking and metal fabrication.
In 2025, Scott grew his team and transitioned to a larger commercial studio in Longmont, Colorado to meet the growing demand for bespoke residential furniture and commercial hospitality projects.

At Dust & Spark, the furniture-making process is a partnership rooted in technical expertise and transparency. Our studio acts as a professional guide, translating conceptual visions into tangible, functional centerpieces for homes and commercial spaces.
Custom Commissions: Every piece begins by determining the client’s specific needs, space requirements, and aesthetic goals. Then we blend these aspects into a design concept before letting the sparks and dust fly to create your piece. All the while keeping you updated throughout the process until delivery or installation.
Material Harmony: The studio specializes in the dialogue between wood and steel. By pairing sustainably sourced hardwoods with "living" metal finishes and VOC-free hard-wax oils, Dust & Spark creates pieces that are as environmentally responsible as they are beautiful.
Built for Generations: The ultimate goal is to craft functional art that transcends trends. These are heirloom-quality pieces designed to store memories and gain character over generations of daily use.

We view every project as a partnership rooted in intentionality and collaborative cultivation. Our team acts as a guide, using our deep knowledge of material science and fabrication to help a wide range of clients bring their visions to life.
Homeowners & Families: We work closely with individuals to design custom residential furniture that fits their specific needs, space, and aesthetic. From selecting a unique live edge slab to choosing non-toxic, VOC-free finishes that are safe for the home, we help families create heirloom pieces designed to become "members of the family".
Commercial & Hospitality Brands: Our studio is equipped for large-scale artisanal projects that require both beauty and durability. We have a proven track record of supporting local businesses, including building out custom fixtures for Hearth Bakery and fabricating restaurant tables for the Flagstaff House.
Architects & Designers: We bring an engineering mindset to professional collaborations, ensuring that complex designs function as well in reality as they look on paper. By bridging the gap between design and technical fabrication, we help industry partners deliver focal pieces to their clients.
Sustainable Custom Furniture
Environmental sustainability is core to Dust & Spark. We prioritize sourcing materials that are as kind to the environment as they are beautiful in the home.
Domestic Hardwoods: We source high-quality lumber from the US and Canada to ensure adherence to strict sustainable forestry standards.
Salvaged Live Edge Wood: Many custom tables feature salvaged kiln dried slabs from trees harvested due to urban development, storms, or disease.
Recyclable Metals: Built from North American steel and other recyclable metals, every piece is engineered for a 100+ year lifespan and infinite recyclability.
Eco-Friendly Finishes: To ensure a healthy home environment, our studio uses VOC-free hard-wax oils, eliminating toxic off-gassing while enhancing the natural warmth of wood species like Walnut and Oak.
Our Team
Scott Hensen
Driven by the belief that his career should nurture purpose through gifting, impact and fulfillment, Scott was bound to end up founding a business involving creativity and hands on work. Combining a natural tenacity to fixate on something until he has figured it out and a need for furniture in his home after getting married, Scott developed his passion in the craft of custom furniture. His vision is to use Dust & Spark to mentor others with the same passion and make pieces with meaning.
